George Town, Cayman Islands, British Overseas Territories
Hon. Ormond Lauder Panton, OBE
(June 24, 1920 - January 22, 1992)
The first Caymanian attorney to appear before the Privy Council in London, he founded the first political party to succeed at the polls and was the first politician to win an election as party leader.
He was also the youngest delegate to attend the West Indies Federation discussions, and served as the lead negotiator between the UK and its Overseas Territories in discussions on independence.
Representing the district of George Town as a legislator, he introduced a motion to allow local authorities to issue US visa waivers, thereby facilitating Caymanians' employment as merchant marines.
In his private career, the outspoken attorney achieved many more firsts for his country including succeeding in confirming his right to a fair trial in 1955.
Recognised by Queen Elizabeth II, he was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1984.
Declared a National Hero in 2011.
