1. 1777 - Hopkinson Flag Marker
Inscription. The first flag of the United States. On June 14, 1777, Continental Congress adopted the following: Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. The design of the first Stars and Stripes by Francis Hopkinson, member of Congress, had the thirteen stars arranged in the unmistakable outline of the crosses of St. George and of St. Andrew, as used together on the British flag.
