Inscription.

In 1914 and 1915, the Verdun forts played no significant role In the fighting, as the stronghold of the city had not been subjected to direct attack.
After two years of war, the French high command had serious doubts about the effectiveness of the forts after the rapid fall of those belonging to the Belgian army. In addition, faced with a lack of soldiers and artillery elsewhere, they decided to remove men and guns from the defensive system. Verdun did not escape these measures.

The 75 mm guns in the Bourges casemates and the armored turret at Fort Vaux were dismantled. Although the fort retained small artillery pieces to defend its ditches, all its heavy firepower was removed. The fort was still, however, a shelter capable of withstanding super-heavy shellfire and an important observation post. The fate of the other Verdun forts was similar to that of Vaux, apart from Douaumont Fort which retained its turret-mounted guns. The decision to disarm the stronghold of Verdun would prove to be a

tragic mistake when the Germans launched their offensive of 21 February 1916.
In March 1916, General Pétain ordered the forts to be rearmed. The intensity of the fighting prevented the transport of guns to Fort Vaux. Only the Bourges casemates were equipped with machine guns.
