Inscription.

Several areas of authentic war landscape are still preserved in the 'Palingbeek' provincial park. During costly and ultimately failed attempts between 1864 and 1913 to dig a canal between leper and Komen, the ground here was repeatedly excavated and re-excavated. By the end of 1914 the front line ran across the bed of the disused canal. The British positions included a mound of earth immediately adjacent to the canal, known as The Bluff. This was one of the few places where the Allies held higher ground than their opponents. For this reason, at the end of 1915 and throughout 1916 the Germans repeatedly attempted to capture the position, known to them as Grosse Bastion. As a result, this strategic location was the scene of several underground explosions and heavy fighting. On 25 July 1916, a massive explosion blew away the top of the mound. The British replied at the end of December 1916 with mines of their own. After 1916 the fighting here died down, because the entire area had become an inaccessible quagmire. The armies of both sides dug new positions clinging to the sides of the deep craters.

The ruins of two locks in the park are reminders of the failed attempt to construct the Ieper-Komen canal. The western lock was used by the British as a headquarters and medical aid post. After the war, the landscape around the Bluff remained unaltered. Thanks to the planting of a specially devised route with hedges and remembrance trees, it is now possible to follow the old front line to the Molenbos (“Ravine Wood”). Three small British military cemeteries also mark this war landscape.
