Inscription. Found from Texas to Florida and the Mississippi river valley, the pyramidal or hip-roofed cottage is one of the most common vernacular houses along the Gulf Coast.
These cottages were commonly built in port towns between 1870 and 1900 as rental units or single family homes and were often inhabited by bar pilots, tug boat captains and their families.
The floor plan is symmetrical with rooms of equal size on both sides of the house. Influenced by both French Colonial and Caribbean building traditions, these cottages were an efficient response to the nearly tropic environment.
