Inscription. Daniel Duncan McArthur was called in 1861 by Brigham Young to help establish a settlement in the harsh climate of Southern Utah. It was called the Southern Utah Cotton Mission. He was a nature leader and held many prominent civic and Church positions throughout his life, including Bishop, Presiding Bishop, Seventies Quorum President, State President, and Stake Patriarch. In 1899 he was St. George Stake President when Church President Lorenzo Snow made his historic Visit to St. George reemphasizing the law of tithing.

Daniel was born in upper New York State, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and migrated with the Saints to Kirtland, Ohio, then to Missouri and then to Nauvoo, Illinois. He crossed the plains in 1849 to Salt Lake City, Utah. His life of faith spent in service to God and to his fellow man;
• First mission to Great Britain (1852-1859): President of the Dundee, Scotland Conference.
• Leader on the emigration ship Enoch Train from Bristol to America.
• Captain of the second handcart company to Utah (1856).
• Major in the Utah Militian during the Utah War of 1857.
• Colonel in the Militia during the Indians Wars in southern Utah.
• Second mission to Great Britain (1877-1878): leader in the Manchester Conference.
