St. George in Washington County, Utah — The American Mountains (Southwest)
Robert Gardner, Jr.
Robert Gardiner, Jr. was one of the many early pioneers who helped settle Salt Lake City, St. George, and Pine Valley. Under the direction of Apostle Erastus Snow, Robert organized a survey crew, then cut, planed, and drove a cedar stake into the ground marking the corner of the St. George City survey. His own lot was on the southeast corner of Tabernacle and Main. He also oversaw the hauling of stone and the curing and hauling of lumber for the tabernacle and the temple.
Born Oct 12, 1819 in Kilsyth, Scotland, Robert was called to the Dixie Mission in 1861. He served as the president of the pioneer camp, as the first LDS bishop of St. George, as the presiding bishop of St. George, Shoal Creek, Meadows, Pinto and Pine Valley, and in the first stake presidency of the St. George Stake. He also served two consecutive terms as mayor of St George.
Robert was married to Jane McKeown, Cynthia Barry, Mary Ann Carr, and Leonora Cannon. He died Feb. 3, 1906 in Pine Valley, Utah, and is buried there.
