Jim Crotty
Jim Crotty was born March 31, 1938 in Storm Lake, Iowa. Jim started an interest in football in grade eight. As a high school freshman, his coach was Frank Butch Larson. Jim would help lead the Broncos to three Iron Range Conference titles (1953-1955), one State Championship in 1954, two undefeated seasons (1954-1955), and was named captain of the 1955 team. He was also a star performer in basketball, baseball, and track. Following high school, Jim chose to attend the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame was the alma mater of his father, and was coached by Terry Brennen for his first three seasons and by Joe Kuharick his senior year. He played in the offensive backfield either as a fullback or right halfback. On defense, he played a cornerback. Jim's college highlight was being a part of the victory over Oklahoma in 1957, ending the Sooner's forty-eight game winning streak. He can still recall the silence in the stadium at Norman, Oklahoma, following the Notre Dame victory.
The NFL's Washington Redskins signed Jim as a defensive back. He spent the 1960 season and part of the 1961 season at Washington. His coach with the Redskins was Mike Nixon. Midway through the 1961 season, Jim was picked up by the AFL's Buffalo Bills. He also spent the 1962 season in Buffalo. In 1963, Jim finished his professional football career with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. Jim Crotty lives in Seattle, Washington and was inducted into the Bronco Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
