other Darmstadt institutions can be found in the Renaissance building, which was built in 1590 by Jakob Wustmann and destroyed and rebuilt in the Second World War: the "Ratskeller" and the registry office. During the renovation in 2003, the listed sandstone building was fitted with a glass external elevator that allows barrier-free access to the registry office. In 2010, the building was designated a "cultural asset worthy of protection" and given a corresponding protective marker.

It is one of the oldest buildings in Darmstadt: the Old Town Hall, built from sandstone, which - together with the castle and the market square - forms the old town ensemble. The Renaissance building was built in 1590 by Jakob Wustmann; before that, a half-timbered house stood here for 21 years. During a renovation in 1676, the previously rather plain gables were given protruding spikes and the richly decorated main portal was built. The building was repeatedly rebuilt in the centuries to come; in 1846, for example, the wooden arcades were removed and round windows were installed. In 1926/27, another renovation was carried out by city architect August Buxbaum; the "Ratskeller" moved to the ground floor. In 1944, the Old Town
