The Tempel
History
Tempel Emanu-El was built between 1865 and 1867 by the Dutch Reformed Israeli Community Emanu-El, which had separated from the orthodox Sephardic community Mikve Israel. In 1963 the two Sephardic communities reunited, that same year the Temple was closed after 96 years of service. On August 9th the last service took place, during this service the Torah- rolls were solemnly carried to their new home the Mike Israel-Emanuel synagogue in Punda. In 1995 after years of being vacant the Temple was badly deteriorated and was transferred to the Stichting Monumentenzorg Cura็ao which restored the monument; since 1998, De Tempel houses the Counsel for Prosecution.
Description
The building is an example of 19th century neoclassical architecture. It consists of a rectangular block-shaped building mass with originally one main floor on a basement and a large saddle roof. The tower in the front was added to the design after a few months. If you look closely you can see that the tower is placed against the building and is not incorporated. Characteristic ornamental elements of the neoclassical style are the heavy profiled cornices along the long sides, the corner pilasters and the tympana (triangles) above the doors. The semicircular fanlights with the arched moldings, the so called "eyebrows", are influences of 19th century Dutch architecture.
