La Bataille De Passchendaele (Octobre-Novembre 1917). Pour prendre la crête de Passchendaele, les Canadiens ont affronté, avec un courage et une ténacité hors du commun, le feu nourri d'un ennemi aguerri, fermement campé en terrain dominant. Avançant dans d'horribles conditions, à travers un bourbier souvent à hauteur de taille, le Corps d'armée canadien a subi environ 16 000 pertes, un sacrifice qui témoigne de la mission pratiquement impossible confiée par le haut commandement britannique. Neuf soldats ont reçu la Croix de Victoria pour leur bravoure exceptionnelle, le plus grand nombre décerné pour une même bataille dans toute l'histoire du Canada.,

Faced with an experienced enemy
entrenched in a dominating position,
Canadians fought with extraordinary
courage and determination under intense
fire to capture Passchendaele ridge.
Advancing in horrific conditions through
mud that was often waist-deep, the
Canadian Corps sustained approximately
16,000 casualties during this assault, an
immense cost that testifies to the nearly
impossible objective set by the British
high command. Nine Canadian soldiers
were awarded the Victoria Cross for their
outstanding valour, more than in any
other battle in the history of Canada.

Om de heuvelkam van Passendale te veroveren, trotseerden de Canadezen met buitengewone moed en volharding een krijgsvaardige vijand die hen vanuit verschansingen en een dominante positie zwaar onder vuur nam. Het Canadese legerkorps rukte op in gruwelijke omstandigheden, soms tot aan het middel in de modder, en betaalde een zware tol, met ongeveer 16.000 doden en gewonden, voor de bijna onmogelijke opdracht van het Britse opperbevel. Unter heftigem Beschuss durch einen kampferprobten Feind in günstiger Stellung kämpften die Kanadier mit außergewöhnlichem Mut und großer Entschlossenheit, um die Anhöhen von Passchendaele einzunehmen. Das kanadische Korps rückte unter entsetzlichen Bedingungen durch oft hüfthohen Schlamm vor. Der Angriff kostete es an die 16 000 Tote und Verwundete - ein hoher Preis, der vom nahezu unerreichbaren Ziel der britischen Oberbefehlshaber zeugt. Neun kanadische Soldaten wurden für ihre herausragende Tapferkeit mit dem Victoria-Kreuz ausgezeichnet.
