1. Triple J Tavern Marker
Inscription. “Papa Joe”, as the mayor of East Sixth was called for three decades, was also renowned for playful gunfights with challengers who drifted into Joe Joseph's Triple J Tavern. Called “the fastest gun in the West”, he was confronted by Austin's most dreaded hood, Timmy Overton, refusing to serve his girlfriend Ida. One of his thugs jabbed a gun into Joe's ribs, saying, “I'll bet a hundred dollars, if she's with us, you will!" Joe opened the beer cooler, grabbed his .45, and fired it over his menacing customersʼ heads. His final words were - “Now you grab for’em, and we'll count heads when the smoke clears!"
