1. Carrington Building Marker
Inscription. Austin's first black property owner, Edward Carrington, built his grocery store and home in 1872. Not content just to be a successful rancher and grocer, he responded to his community by loaning money to families to buy farms, gave food to the destitute, and arranged for the burial of impoverished neighbors. His son-in-law, L.D. Lyons, was a champion for the rights of his people and the acknowledged son of Texas governor Elisha Pease. The Carrington-Lyons family was in business on East Sixth Street for a century.
