1. The Grain Barn Marker
Inscription. This 11,525-square-foot grain barn was used for storage for the Brazo Valley Cotton Oil Company, which was established in 1910. Texas was one of the leading producers of cottonseed oil in the 20th century, and this local mill greatly contributed to Waco's economy. Shipments of cottonseed came in on the railroad just outside the Silos grounds from local farmers. After a process of cleaning, dehulling, delinting, bleaching, and deodorizing the cottonseed, workers would then extract oil and ship it all over the world. Any unused meal was sold as cattle feed.
