Inscription. First white settler in Porter County, coming with his family in 1822, making a permanent home in the woodlands on the bank of the Little Calumet.

Joseph Bailly in Northwest Indiana
Arriving around 1824, the Bailly's established a trading post along the Little Calumet River near two major Indigenous trails, which contributed to Joseph’s success as a trader and, later, as a land speculator and innkeeper.
