The Hanau city fortifications (later also Hanau Fortress) are the former fortifications of the two cities of Old and New Hanau. They were built between the 13th and 17th centuries in three consecutive main construction phases. The medieval city fortifications, built around 1300 and expanded around 1429, were supplemented from 1528 by a fortification planned by Reinhard zu Solms, which made it possible to set up cannons. They included the old town of Hanau and the Hanau suburb that was built in the 15th century towards the Kinzig.
