1. Kasteeldomeinen In De Klein Ieperboog Marker
Kasteeldomeinen met hun grote gebouwen en parken waren favoriete plekken om gebruikt te worden in de oorlog. Veel commandanten brachten er hun hoofdkwartier onder. Maar kastelen dienden ook als uitkikpost, als veldhospitaal, als kantonnement. werkplaats, feestgelegenheid, strafplek of - zelfs tot vandaag – als begraafplaats. In de kleine Ieperboog is dat laatste het geval voor het kasteeldomein Kerskenshove dat Bedford House Cemetery werd. Op het kasteeldomein van Potijze werden drie begraafplaatsen van het CWGC ingericht. Van Château Lankhof blijft enkel een groep bunkers op de kasteelmotte over. Het contrast tussen de (ooit) arcadische omgeving van de kastelen en de gruwel van de industriële oorlog bleef veel soldaten bij.
Les châteaux, avec leurs vastes bâtiments et parcs, constituent des lieux très appréciés en temps de conflit. Beaucoup de commandements y installent leur quartier général. Mais ces demeures servent aussi de postes d'observation, d'hôpitaux de campagne, de cantonnements, d'ateliers, de lieux de festivité, de prisons et même, jusqu'à nos jours, de cimetières. Dans le Petit Saillant d'Ypres, nous avons notamment le cas du cimetière Bedford House. Dans le domaine du château de Potijze sont abrité trois cimetières du CWGC. Au château Lankhof, Il ne reste que quelque groupe de bunkers situé dans les douves du château. Bien des soldats sont frappés par le contraste entre l'environnement (à l'époque) idyllique de ces propriétés et l'horreur d'une guerre « industrielle ».
The castle estates, with their large buildings and large grounds, were popular with the armies of both sides during the war. Many commanders chose them as their headquarters. Castles were also used as observation posts, field hospitals, military camps, places of work, places of entertainment, places of punishment and even places of burial. This latter eventuality is what happened to the park surrounding Kerskenshove Chateau, which became Bedford House Cemetery. Three Commonwealth cemeteries were also constructed around the large country houses at Potijze. All that now remains of Lankhof Chateau is a group of bunkers and the old castle moat. Many soldiers were struck by the sharp contrast between the (once) arcadian charm of the castle estates and the horror of industrial war at the front.
Schlossdomänen mit ihren großen Gebäuden und Parks waren Orte, die im Krieg bevorzugt genutzt wurden. Viele Kommandanten brachten dort ihr Hauptquartier unter. Aber Schlösser dienten auch als Beobachtungsposten, als Feldlazarett, als Standquartier, Arbeitsplatz, Ort für Festlichkeiten, Strafanstalt oder - sogar bis heute - als Friedhof. Im Kleinen Ypernbogen gilt Letzteres für die Schlossdomäne Kerskenshove, die zum Bedford House Cemetery wurde. Auf der Schlossdomäne von Potijze wurden drei Friedhöfe des GWGG angelegt. Von Château Lankhof blieben lediglich mehrere Bunker auf dem Schlosshügel übrig Vielen Soldaten blieb der Kontrast zwischen der (einst) arkadischen Umgebung der Schlösser und den Gräueln des industriellen Krieges im Gedächtnis.
