On 2 June, the defenders of the fort repelled a series of offensives, but were eventually forced to give way or were attacked from behind. They retreated to the casements defending the ditches.

Pursued by the Germans, they set up temporary barricades. As they retreated, they erected sandbags and sheltered behind them, continuing to resist the enemy with machines guns and grenades. An infernal, inch-by-inch battle now ensued in the darkness of the communication galleries that ran under the ditches to the center of the fort.

On the surface, the Germans dug in and set up a machine gun battery aimed at the exits.

Throughout the day on 3 June, the fighting continued in the underground corridors. On 4 June, the Germans transformed the gallery into a living nightmare through use of a flamethrower, the effect of which were even more dreadful in the confined space of the concrete underground tunnels.

In a now choking atmosphere, with their munitions and water supplies exhausted, the men continued to

fight for the whole of the next day. On 7 June at 6 am, the garrison surrendered unable to resist any longer. The Germans had only advanced along each gallery by around 65 meters. Seven French soldiers were killed and around 80 wounded.

(Marker Number 3.)
