1. Kastelenin de Ieperboog Marker
In de omgeving van leper waren voor de oorlog meer dan 50 kas-teeldomeinen. Ze bepaalden mee het landschap waarin de oorlog terechtkwam. Enkele domeinen dateerden uit de feodale tijd, zoals in Hollebeke, en domineerden in veel opzichten hun omgeving. Ieperse notabelen, adel en burgerij, hadden naast hun huis in de stad ook 'campagnes' buiten. In de 19de eeuw ontstonden in de industrie nieuwe fortuinen. Vooral de textielnijverheid in Noord-Frankrijk bracht nieuwe kasteeldomeinen en bewoners naar leper en omgeving. Er waren dan ook heel wat Franse / Ieperse kasteelbewoners, zoals de familie Mahieu in Voormezele / Hollebeke. Anno 1914 waren veel domeinen rijk. Een aantal voorzag bijna volledig in eigen behoeften. De grootste domeinen waren Mahieu (47 ha.) en Hooge (38 ha.)
Avant la guerre, les environs d'Ypres comptaient plus de 50 châteaux et domaines. Ils ont défini le territoire sur lequel la guerre s'est déroulée. Certains domaines datent de l'époque féodale, comme le château de Hollebeke, et dominent, à bien des égards, leur environnement. Les notables, aristocrates et bourgeois d'Ypres, possèdent, outre leur maison de ville, une résidence campagnarde. Au XIXe siècle, l'industrie a fait naitre de nouvelles fortunes. L'activité textile du nord de France, en particulier, a amené de nouveaux habitants et entraîné l'aménagement de domaines à Ypres et dans ses alentours. Le général Durutte, vétéran de l'armée napoléonienne, a été l'un de ces premiers châtelains « franco-yprois ». En 1914, beaucoup de ces domaines sont prospères. Certains vivent presque en autarcie. Les plus vastes sont le domaine de Mahieu (47 ha) et le domaine de Hooge (38 ha).
In the years before 1914, there were more than 50 castles in the coun-tryside around Ypres. These castles and their estates helped to determine the landscape over which the war was fought. Some of them dated back to feudal times, such as Hollebeke Chateau, and in many respects they still dominated their localities. Whether they belonged to the nobility or to the bourgeoisie, the leading families in Ypres all had a manor in the country in addition to their mansions in the city. During the 19th century, large for-tunes could be made in the rapidly expanding textile industry, particularly in Northern France. Many of these 'new rich' were attracted to the more pleasant surroundings of the Westhoek. As a result, there were numerous French owners and inhabitants of the castles near Ypres, such as the Mahieu family in Voormezele/Hollebeke. By 1914, many of these estates were worth a small fortune. Several were self-sufficient in all their needs. The largest estates were Mahieu (47 hectares) and Hooge (38 hectares).
In der Umgebung von Ypern gab es vor dem Krieg mehr als 50 Schlossdomänen. Sie waren mitbestimmend für die Landschaft, in die es den Krieg verschlug. Einzelne Domänen wie die in Hollebeke stammten noch aus der Feudalzeit und dominierten ihre Umgebung in vielerlei Hinsicht. Honoratioren aus Ypern, Adel und Bürgertum, hatten neben ihrem Haus in der Stadt auch „campagnes" oder Landsitze außerhalb. Im 19. Jahrhundert entstanden in der Industrie neue Vermögen. Besonders die nordfranzösische Textilindustrie brachte neue Schlossdomänen und bewohner nach Ypern und Umgebung. So gab es sehr viele französisch-Ypernsche Schlossbewohner, etwa die Familie Mahieu in Voormezele / Hollebeke. Anno 1914 waren viele Domänen reich. Eine Reihe von ihnen waren nahezu völlige Selbstversorger. Die größten Schlösser waren Mahieu (47 ha) und Hooge (38 ha).
