1. Harry Frank Guggenheim, Daniel Island Land Owner Marker
Inscription. In 1947, Harry Frank Guggenheim purchased all of the land on Daniel Island. Like other wealthy industrialists from the Northeast, he was drawn to the Lowcountry lifestyle and setting and enjoyed his plantation and land as a family hunting retreat and cattle ranch. Upon his death in 1971, Daniel Island passed to the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.

The island's central location and proximity to downtown Charleston made it a valuable asset to the area, especially once construction of the Mark Clark Expressway was completed in the early 1990s. Realizing the land's potential value, The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation began careful consideration of how the island should be developed.

The Foundation was actively involved in the preliminary planning for Daniel Island's modern day development. In 1997, it sold the land to the Daniel Island Company, which assumed the responsibility of developing the island in accordance with the vision of The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.
