1. Hire, Jent & Bray Marker

Inscription. This shot was made in the middle 1960s and shows the old Ray building which at that time housed the Hire & Jent department store. Hazel Bray came to Monterey in 1952, after he got out of the army to manage Hire & Jent, in the Ray Building. The 5 & 10 cent store operated at this location until 1966, when the Ray family built the round bank building. Hire, Jent & Bray moved eastward one block and sold everything from toys and housewares to suits, dresses and bikes until it closed in 1990.
