Communication Trench
1917
Verbindingsloopgraaf, 1916-1917
By 1917, Germany was suffering a shortage of metal and jute, which came from the tropics. Hence you would see a lot of hazel and willow wickerwork in this type of communication trench, as used in Bayernwald near Wijtschate, for example. The duckboards are laid on A-frames, a beam structure in the form of an inverted letter A.
