Inscription. Why is the Civilian - Military Relationship Important?

• The U.S. Constitution requires civilian control of the Military, and the President of the United States is the Commander-in-Chief.

• Civilian elected officials are responsible for funding and committing the military to defend our freedoms, fostering a special relationship that contributes to the respect and appreciation of service members by the civilian population.

• In other words, Civilians decide whether to send our military personnel to war, and those that answer their Country's call to defend our freedom deserve our highest respect.

• Civilian women (and men) worked the factories during World War II and directly contributed to the successful conclusion of that war.

• Civilian contractors directly support the military at home and abroad with their technical expertise to help manage highly technical equipment.

• Community support to families whose service members are deployed has a huge impact on the willingness of service members to extend their service.

• Community support for families who have had a service member killed in action. Support for these GOLD STAR FAMILIES is vital in this greatest time of need. (Marker Number M17.)
