1. Company B, 151st Engineering Combat Battalion Army National Guard Marker

Inscription. Background: Company B of the 151st Engineering Combat Battalion, formed in 1947 in Jackson County, was activated on August 14, 1950, to support the Korean War. After training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Company B arrived in Korea on January 31, 1951.

Who was in Company B? The unit consisted of 164 members, most all being teenagers or in their early twenties. Three were only fifteen years old. Charles Bradford, a WWII veteran, was the Captain in charge. Major Mark Skelton, another WWII veteran, was assigned to Battalion Headquarters.

What did Company B do in Korea? The major function of Company B was to build and maintain roads and bridges to enable troop movement and to allow the transport of essential supplies. These functions in the Korean Conflict were particularly critical because of the back-and-forth movements of the armies. The unit also had demolition experts who removed mines and checked for booby traps.

When on a support mission, Company B escaped almost certain annihilation by a massive Chinese army when Captain Bradford countermanded instructions to remain in place. The "Boys of Company B" credit him with saving their lives.

Back Home! Members of Company B returned home in early 1952. Remarkably, 164 left and 164 returned. Many became city leaders and successful businessmen. How different would the future of Jackson County have been if Captain Bradford had chosen to remain in place? (Marker Number M18.)
