Het stratenplan in dit noordwestelijke deel van De Pijp is in 1870 door J.G. van Niftrik ontworpen op basis van een raster dat dwars stond op het bestaande patroon van sloten. De latere bebouwing in het overige deel van De Pijp heeft wel de bestaande agrarische verkavelingsstructuur gevolgd. Aan de Gerard Doustraat, waar de twee ontwerpen samenkomen, zijn de huizen daarom noodgedwongen in een puntvorm gebouwd.

The street plan in this northwestern section of De Pijp was designed by J.G. van Niftrik in 1870 on the basis of a grid transverse to the existing pattern of canals. Subsequent building in the remainder of De Pijp has followed the existing agricultural allotment structure. Consequently on Gerard Doustraat, where the two designs converge, the houses have been constructed in the form of a wedge out of sheer necessity.
