Inscription. Infancy: On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, manned by crews of eighty, and sent them to intercept British supply ships.

Today: Your U.S. Navy maintains, trains, and equips combat-ready naval forces capable of deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas. The Navy projects U.S. power around the world on the Seas, under the Oceans, and in the air.

Your Navy performs rescues at sea, transports emergency personnel and relief supplies, and community service (both in the United States and abroad).

Did you Know? All active U.S. aircraft carriers and submarines are nuclear powered. The Nimitz-class carrier has two naval reactors that give the ship almost unlimited range and provide enough electrical energy to power a city of 100,000. (Marker Number M9.)
