What did the Continental Congress do to Win?
Create an Army - They authorized the formation of just ten companies of riflemen and directed them to fight the British. George Washington was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief, and the US Army was born.
Create a Marine Corps - Two battalions of Continental Marines were formed to fight at sea and onshore, creating the U.S. Marine Corps.
Create a NavyTo defend against and defeat the huge British naval force, the US Navy was created when just seven ships were commissioned. With the help of France, it continued to fight against the British until peace was secured in September 1783.
How Did We Win? By overcoming unbelievable odds, hardships, and handicaps, being adaptive, and the belief that freedom is worth fighting for.
How costly was this War? The War for Independence came at a high price. Casualties included about 7,000 American citizens dead and another 8,000 to 25,000 wounded to secure our Independence. Always remember, "Freedom is Never Free."
Factoid: Although the State of Alabama had not yet been formed, at least 56 patriots from Jackson County fought, and many were killed. (Marker Number W1.)
