More about this marker. The memorial is in front of Illinois Bell's old headquarters at the corner of Randolph and Franklin; the building, completed in 1966, was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2021.
Illinois Bell began business in 1878 and by the turn of the 20th century was a part of AT&T's Bell network. In 1984, when AT&T divested its Bell companies, it became part of Ameritech, which retired the Illinois Bell name in 1993.
