Hervormde Kerk Limmen
⎯⎯⎯
Reformed Church of Limmen
Inscription.
Reformed Church of Limmen
The church is located on the southern point of the Limmen-Heiloo-Alkmaar dunes ridge. The oldest mention dates from 740 when the dilapidated church was renovated. Around 800 there is talk of a -presumably- wooden church in Limbon that is owned by the St. Maartenskerk in Utrecht. In the 13th century a tower was built separately from the existing tuff stone hall church. In the 14th century a large brick church with choir was added, the tower was then built in. The whole then became twice as large as what can still be seen today. In 1598 the church was restored from the destruction by the Spanish troops during the siege of Alkmaar and reached its current size. The last ruins on the east side were cleared in 1806, but can still be partly seen at ground level.
The church with tower, Hemony bell from 1650 and Fleas organ from 1876 is a national monument. The last restoration was carried out in the years 2000/2001 under the supervision of the National Service for the Preservation of Monuments.
