Jews had been in Hoorn for a long time; the first Portuguese Jewish traders arrived here in 1622. A flourishing Jewish community developed in the port and trading city. A synagogue was built on the Italian Zeedijk in 1780, but in the 20th century the number of Jews in the city decreased more and more. On the eve of the occupation, the synagogue was only used on special occasions. When the German invasion became a fact, the Jews of German descent living in Hoorn were immediately transferred to Westerbork. And the synagogue was sold to a member of the NSB during the occupation.(Submitted on March 23, 2025.)
In April 1942, the remaining Jews in Hoorn were forced to leave for Amsterdam, from where they were further deported...
