In the morning hours of June 2. 1971 U.S. Army scout dog handler Mark Randall Taylor and his loyal U.S. Army scout dog Krieger (65M8) were executing a scouting patrol to detect a hidden enemy force of Communist North Vietnamese soldiers. The enemy soldiers were suspected to be concealing themselves in heavy jungle vegetation waiting to ambush nearby U.S. soldiers. Upon detection by the dog team the enemy opened fire. Mark Taylor was killed scout dog Krieger died protecting and shielding his fallen handler.
