Gedenksteen voor slachtoffer roofhandel en moord: 'Deze mensen zijn verdwenen, letterlijk in rook opgegaan' = Memorial stone for victim of robbery and murder: 'These people have disappeared, literally gone up in smoke'. Excerpt (in translation):
De Ruyterkade 127 was built in 1909 as a warehouse by Isaac Poppelhouwer. And although the building has now been modernised into office space and a hotel, the original faηade still stands proudly opposite the IJ. The ideal base for the cheese trade that Isaac's son Mozes operates from that address.(Submitted on March 24, 2025.)
However, the cheese warehouse was taken from him on 22 May 1943. Jewish real estate was expropriated and resold during the Second World War. Estate agents, notaries and buyers profited greedily from the thousands of homes that were offered far below market value. These transactions were registered in the so-called Verkaufsbόcher, the real estate books of the German occupier.
This fate also befell Mozes Poppelhouwer. His warehouse was sold to the liqueur distiller Bols, led by the eccentric director Bernard Carp. The building was sold for a pittance via a shell company: on the same day it changed owners twice. As a result, the notary and an anonymous middleman earn a lot of money through robbery, and liqueur distiller Bols is richer by a cheap building. Mozes Poppelhouwer does not live to see all this. He was murdered in Auschwitz 6 months before this transaction.
