Inscription. This area, including the bridge over Little Duck River, has for years been known as "Jail Hill". Several jails have stood on this location. The first brick jail was completed in 1837, and was used as such until about 1857, when it was destroyed by fire. A brick and stone jail was completed in 1859, costing about $6,000. The last one built here was in 1912 at a cost of $12,000. This building was closed in 1982 when the jail was moved to the former Coffee County Central High School property.

Somewhere near the jail once stood a brick reservoir that held water pumped from the town spring. This early water system, built in 1889, furnished water to all the houses and businesses in the City of Manchester.
