1. 90-year-old Corona school takes its place on historic register (Press Enterprise, 12/13/2017). Excerpt:
What does Corona’s Jefferson Elementary School have in common with the Old Faithful Inn, the Library of Congress and the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” Sign?

The still-in-use 90-year-old school has just joined the National Register of Historic Places, an achievement 20 years in the making that will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 15.

Construction of the one-story, five-room stacked concrete school at 1040 S. Vicentia Ave. cost $23,800, was designed by W. Horace Austin and was finished in December 1927 under the PTA slogan, “Better Homes, Better Schools, Better Children.” About 163 children began school there in January 1928.

Four years later, a south wing containing an auditorium — designed by Riverside architect G. Stanley Wilson, who designed parts of Riverside’s Mission Inn and Norco’s Lake Norconian Club – was added.

The Spanish Colonial Revival-style original school and its 1931-addition south wing, with red tile roofs, stone arches and wrought iron details, were added to
