Componist en dirigent. Zong als jongen in een katholiek kerkkoor en bracht het als tiener tot eerste violist in de hofkapel van koning Willem I. Als componist en als topfunctionaris in het Nederlandse muziek- leven is zijn invloed aanzienlijk geweest.

(Composer and conductor. Sang as a boy in a Catholic church choir and as a teenager rose to first violin in the court chapel of King William I. As a composer and as a top official in Dutch musical life, his influence has been considerable.)
