In the Doelen, the militia came together to practice on the Doelenveld, to meet or to party during the famous militia meals. The militia was originally founded to protect the city, but lost its function over the years. Eventually, in the 18th century, it only existed as a social club. In addition to the infamous militia meals, the militia is known for its beautiful militia pieces. The Hoorn militia pieces can be viewed in the Westfries Museum.

militia in Hoorn was also divided into two guilds: the older St. Joris and the younger St. Sebastian guild. Both guilds were located in this building and were eventually forced to merge. The building underwent several transformations. The left part is the oldest part of the building. This exuberant facade was built in a style that we call baroque. Here you can also see the gate with a representation of Saint Sebastian. The sober right facade is the result of a renovation in 1779. The building is an important part of the history of Hoorn and has been owned by the Hendrick de Keyser Association since 1987.
