Bayrisches Staatsballett

Bavarian State Ballet
Rehearsal Building at Platzl

The history of the Bavarian State Ballet looks back over more than 350 years. It started with ballet at the Court of the Bavarian Kurfuersten (Dukes), later Kings of Bavaria. After the revolution of 1918 it became the ballet of the Bavarian State Opera.

Since 1989 it is an independent artistic institution. It settled in to the new rehearsal and administration building at the historic Platzl, house number 7, in 1992.

The rehearsal building hosts four studios, administration offices, a physio-therapy department and a kindergarten. Occasionally, various events take place at the studios.

The Bavarian State Ballet's main performance venue is the National Theatre (State Opera i House) nearby at the Max-Joseph-Platz / Maximilianstrasse.

Artistic guidelines: Preserving the classical ballet-tradition, intensive cultivation of all contemporary directions and the avant-garde.

The Bavarian State Ballet (German: Bayerisches Staatsballett) is a professional ballet company in Munich, Germany. It was founded in 1988 by Konstanze Vernon as an independent company. The ballet had previously been part of the Bayerische Staatsoper. In a broader sense, Bavarian State Ballet is sometimes used for the Bavarian State Opera Ballet before 1988. Vernon was the director of the independent company for the first 10 years, succeeded by Ivan Liška. From 2016 to 2022, Igor Zelensky was director of the ballet. In 2022, Laurent Hilaire took over the ballet. The company is formed
