[Français] Malgré les déportations des années 1750 et 1760, de nombreux Acadiens revinrent d'exil et d'autres quittèrent leur refuge pour se réinstaller sur leur terre natale. S'armant de courage et de détermination, ils fondèrent de nouveaux établissements dans des régions isolées des maritimes et restaurèrent progressivement leurs institutions sociales et culturelles. De nombreux dirigeants acadiens reçurent leur formation au collège Saint-Joseph, fondé en 1864, et des milliers d'Acadiens assistèrent ici, en 1881, à leur première convention nationale, qui contribua à consolider leur sentiment d'identité.

[English] Despite the deportations of the 1750s and 1760s, many Acadians returned from exile and others came out of hiding to resume their former way of life. With fortitude and determination they created new settlements in isolated parts of the maritimes and gradually re-established their own social and cultural institutions. Many Acadian leaders were educated here at College Saint-Joseph, founded in 1864. On this site in 1881 was held the first Acadian National Convention which brought thousands of Acadians together for the first time and helped to strengthen their sense of identity.

3. Monuments Board of Canada Markers - Monument-Lefebvre National Historic Site

Canada. From 1864, through the next thirty years, the College, under his guidance, helped to educate many of the leaders of the Acadian Renaissance. In 1881, the College served as the site of the first Acadian National Convention, where the framework of ensuring the survival, strengthening and growth of Acadian culture began. Father Lefebvre died in January 1895 and, one month later, a campaign began among alumni and friends of Saint Joseph's College to recognize the institution's founder through the construction of a new building in his honour. The Monument Lefebvre building was inaugurated in ceremonies on June 16-17, 1897.

2. History of the Acadians (Wikipedia).

Excerpt: On July 20–21, 1881, Acadian leaders organized the first Acadian National Convention in Memramcook, New Brunswick, which had for its goal to take care of the general interests of the Acadian population. More than 5,000 Acadians participated in the convention. It was decided that August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, would be chosen to celebrate Acadian

culture as National Acadian Day. Other debates at the convention centered around education, agriculture, emigration, colonization, and newspapers, and these same issues would arise at subsequent conventions.
