Oostereiland

Eastern Island
The Oostereiland, an urban expansion with economic purposes, was constructed around 1650. In Hoorn, however, the Golden Age was already over, because the local economy stagnated. Because of this, and because of its location on the wild Zuiderzee, the island remained almost empty at first. Later, there were warehouses on the island, the admiralty with a shipyard, a beggar's asylum and eventually a prison.

this time that the economy stagnated and developments on the Oostereiland proceeded less quickly than expected. Later, a shipyard was established on the Oostereiland and the warehouses for the Admiralty were built here. The Admiralty was involved in the organisation of the war fleet, both administratively, organisationally and legally, and the Oostereiland was a suitable location for the warehouses. Its location on the wild Zuiderzee made it a rough place and it was therefore an appealing idea that a prison was to be built here in the 19th century. The prison was in use until 2003 and after that Oostereiland was set up for several (cultural) purposes.
