Production : 1902

Produced: 1902

Field gun captured by the 60th battalion on April 13, 1917 in the Bois de la Folie after the Battle of Vimy Ridge, Pas-de-Calais, France.

On the gun are the initials R W and the numeral II, which stand for Reich Wilhelm II in reference to the German emperor Wilhelm II. The motto Ultima Ratio Regis means "The king's ultimate argument." This kind of detailed inscription became impossible with the mass production of field guns during the First World War.

1. 15 cm schwere Feldhaubitze 1902 (Wikipedia).
Excerpt:  German heavy field howitzer introduced in 1903 and served in World War I. It was the first artillery piece to use a modern recoil system in the German Army. Some 416 were in service at the beginning of the World War I. Its mobility, which allowed it to be deployed as medium artillery, and fairly heavy shell gave the German army a firepower advantage in the early battles in Belgium and France in 1914 as the French and British armies lacked an equivalent.

the German-held high ground of Vimy Ridge, an escarpment on the northern flank of the Arras front. This would protect the First Army and the Third Army farther south from German enfilade fire. Supported by a creeping barrage, the Canadian Corps captured most of the ridge during the first day. The village of Thélus fell during the second day, as did the crest of the ridge, once the Canadian Corps overran a salient against considerable German resistance. The final objective, a fortified knoll outside the village of Givenchy-en-Gohelle, fell to the Canadians on 12 April.
Historians attribute the success of the Canadian Corps to technical and tactical innovation, meticulous planning, powerful artillery support and extensive training. The battle was the first occasion when the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together and it was made a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice.
