Peter H. Roos

Waterloo Music Society
Both Peter and his brother Julius served as presidents of the Waterloo Music Society. He was an active member for over 50 years. His most prominent involvement was the recruitment of band masters taking him abroad to the United States to interview potential applicants. The late C.F. Thiele, Waterloo band director for over 30 years, was selected by Mr. Roos. Peter served as snare drummer for over 60 years and won numerous band tournaments. He also composed a number of marches. He named one of them "Dominion" after the firm at which he worked.
Outdoorsman
As a young man in his twenties, he was a member of the Waterloo Hunting and Fishing Club and the Round Lake Fishing Club. He was also very active in sports. Every year he faithfully attended the Canadian National Exhibition and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Peter was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and received his 60 year jewel as a prestigious member of the Germania Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, IOOF.
Dominion Life Assurance Company
As a young man in his teens, he started out working with his father in the Boot and Shoe business. At 26 he joined the Dominion Life Assurance Company in 1892 as a policy writer, very quickly rising to the important position of secretary treasurer. By 1918, he resigned his position as treasurer and was appointed as the Home Office representative for Waterloo. This afforded him more time to enjoy his outdoor activities.
Probably the oldest active insurance representative in point of service and years, Peter Roos retired from Dominion Life Assurance Company as branch manager in 1936. He did, however continue on as a salesman, where he won many awards for top salesman. In 1940, he became the secretary to Canada Health and Accident Insurance Company and stayed working there until his death in 1955. He was 89 years old.
