The Water Trough
| | Discover Georgetown South Carolina | |
The National Humane Alliance presented this elaborate water trough to Georgetown in 1911. It was installed in the middle of Broad Street near the Front Street intersection. The top bowl held water for horses, while dogs could drink from the smaller bowls at the base. The post on top supported a lighted globe that matched the streetlights. With the increased use of automobiles, it was no longer needed and became a traffic hazard. In 1993, as part of the streetscape renovation, it became the focal point of the park at the corner of Front and Screven Streets.
