Historique
L'édifice, construit par le ministère de la Défense nationale en 1938-1939, est utilisé pour l'inspection des munitions jusqu'à la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Le NCSM Montcalm y emménage en 1947.
NCSM Montcalm
Le NCSM (Navire canadien de Sa Majesté) Montcalm fait partie de la Réserve navale du Canada créée en 1923. Dans chaque ville, des volontaires rattachés à des bases terrestres peuvent ainsi s'initier au service à bord des navires. La Division de Québec prend le nom de NCSM Montcalm en 1941.
Architecture
L'architecture, une réalisation de Ludger Robitaille et de Gabriel Desmeules, s'inspire de celle des châteaux de la Loire. Elle s'harmonise en outre avec celle de l'édifice voisin, le manège militaire, conçu par Eugène-Étienne Taché en 1887. Le 5 mars 1992, le Bureau d'examen des édifices fédéraux du patrimoine recommande que l'immeuble soit classé monument historique.
Vocation nouvelle
En janvier 1995, le NCSM Montcalm déménage dans le Vieux-Port de Québec. La Commission des champs de bataille nationaux obtient la gestion de l'édifice le 28 mai 1996. Au printemps 1998, elle inaugure la Maison de la découverte pour mieux faire connaître toutes les richesses des plaines d'Abraham. En 2014, à l'occasion du 75e anniversaire du bâtiment, une nouvelle appellation lui est donnée. Il devient alors le Musée des plaines d'Abraham.
Insigne de la Division
La tour à trois tourelles est empruntée des armoiries du marquis de Montcalm. À l'origine, la tourelle est blanche sur fond noir. Ici, elle est représentée sur un champ mi-rouge mi-bleu pour symboliser la double appartenance du Québec : anglaise et française.
Background
This building was erected in 1938-39 by the Department of National Defence and used as an ammunition inspection facility until the end of the Second World War. It was refitted for HMCS Montcalm in 1947.
HMCS Montcalm
HMCS Montcalm (Her Majesty's Canadian Ship) is part of the Naval Reserve of Canada, established in 1923. In every large city, volunteers attached to land bases could, because of the presence of the Naval Reserve, learn the basics of naval service. The Quebec Division was christened HMCS Montcalm in 1941.
Architecture
The building was designed by Ludger Robitaille and Gabriel Desmeules and was inspired by French chateaus in the Loire valley. It fits in well with its neighbour, the Military Armoury built in 1887 from plans by Eugène-Étienne Taché. On March 5, 1992, the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office recommended that the building be classified as a historical monument.
New Vocation
In January 1995, HMCS Montcalm moved to new premises at the Old Port of Quebec. Care for the old facility was entrusted to the National Battle-fields Commission on May 28, 1996. In the spring of 1998, the NBC inaugurated the Discovery Pavilion as a showcase for the many treasures of the Plains of Abraham. In 2014 on the occasion of the building's 75th anniversary, it was renamed the Plains of Abraham Museum.
Division Emblem
The tower with three turrets is borrowed from the Marquis of Montcalm's coat of arms. Originally, the turret was white on a black background. Here, it appears on a background that is half red and half blue to symbolize that Quebec has both English and French ties.
