Harry Truman unveiled the monument at Griffith Stadium on June 21, 1947.
Truman remarked, “I am honored and privileged to be called upon to unveil this plaque to a man, who in my opinion is the greatest ballplayer who ever lived. He was a great ballplayer, a great American, and a great citizen of The United States.”

When Griffith Stadium was demolished in 1965 the Walter Johnson monument was moved to Walter Johnson High School. These seats from Griffith Stadium are preserved in the main office of Walter Johnson High School.
