Inscription. This former residence, built in 1825 for Tench Ringgold by enslaved and free laborers, is one of the few remaining Federal-period buildings in the section of Washington, DC, known as "the President's Neighborhood." The original two-and-a-half story house with English-style basement was expanded by second owner Sally Sprigg Carroll, who added another floor as well as porches on the west and north sides. During the residence of the Carrolls, the home hosted so many social gatherings that it became "as well known to the old residents of the city as the White House itself," according to the Evening Star. The third owner, Mary Ellen Fuller, modified the front entrance to its appearance today; enclosed the north porch; constructed a four-story west wing, replacing Mrs. Carroll's earlier porch; and renovated the outbuildings. The house interior was modernized in the early 20th century and again in the 1980s.
