Civil War

July 22, 1861, enlisted Warren, Ohio, Private Troop 'K' 6th Regular Cavalry, Army of the Potomac. Promoted in the field by Sec. of War Stanton to 2nd Lieut. during Stoneman's Raid. Promoted 1st Lieut. Feb. 1865. Brevetted Captain for gallantry at Dinwiddie Court House. Three times wounded, once at Gettysburg. Fought in fifty-four battles of the war. Member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.

Indian Wars

Captain Troop I 6th Cavalry 1867-1888. Brevetted Major and Lieut. Colonel for acts of extreme courage and bravery. Assisted in the capture of Geronimo. Promoted Major Reg. Army July 1888.

Spanish War

1898 as Brig. Gen. Vol. 3d Brig. 2d Div. 5th Corps, his action at El Caney won for him the popular title Hero of El Caney.

China Relief Expedition (Boxer Rebellion)

1900 commanded American Troops in joint allied action. While in Peking promoted Maj. Gen. Reg. Army. Excerpt Letter Secretary of State: "Your whole administration

Philippine Insurrection

1901-1902 Military Governor of the Philippine Islands. 1902-1903 command Dept. of the East, Governor's Is. N. Y. 1904 promoted Lieut General, Chief of Staff, Washington. 1905 elected honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati... Made Grand Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honor by the Government of France.

1906 retired after forty-five years of service.
1906-1914 active in civic work. City of los Angeles.

Died November 1, 1914

Buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D. C., with highest military honors.
