THE FUTURE OF CONNAUGHT STREET & ENVIRONS
Connaught Street and Environs Residents and Traders Group

In March 2023 the Connaught Street and Environs Residents and Traders group was formed. The community group's main aim is to help restore our once bustling and vibrant streets, O'Connell St. and Connaught St., back to their former glory and to act in the interests of locals, residents and businesses alike. We aim to act as a strong and legible voice for the area, putting forward the concerns of residents and business. We are actively developing a strong and coherent vision for the street's future. By furthering the interests of our community at large, we aim [to] help the street and locales to develop, flourish once more and prosper.

Picture this: A lively, thriving Connaught Street, filled once more with small local businesses, and a vibrant community spirit. Restoring that most Irish of street typologies of living over the shop.

Unfortunately in recent years, this cherished street has endured the hardships of dereliction and dilapidation and many of our once vibrant buildings now lie idle and empty.

Connaught Street served local communities on the Connaught side of Athlone for many, many years and we would be wise to remember, celebrate and cherish this relationship. Connaught

St. and Environs Community Group fully intend to.

There was indeed once a time in living memory, when people who lived on the Connaught side of town never needed to cross the bridge to "the far side". Everything they could possibly need was provided for in some shape or form between O'Connell Street and Connaught Street, and even Pearse Street. We believe that with considered thought and strategic planning for the street's future, Connaught St. and O'Connell St. can once again act as the lifeblood for the Connaught side and beyond.

The Connaught Street and Environs Community Group has the vision and an unyielding determination to restore Connaught Street's unique character and breathe new life into its every corner. We have already made great strides by securing funding from Westmeath County Council, the Arts Council and the Heritage Council for artistic and historic projects and for street maintenance.

But we need your support, to make our vision for Connaught St. and O'Connell St. a reality! Donations welcome to our gofundme page for this and other projects. Please also take the time to fill out our online ideas box for what your vision for the street might be. Follow us on instagram for more updates on the area.
