Inscription.
John Broderick (1927-1989) was an Irish novelist who emerged as one of the significant voices of 20th-century Irish literature. Born in Athlone, Broderick's writings drew deeply from the socio-religious conflicts of his native land, and they often portrayed the lives of small-town inhabitants with a profound depth of understanding and compassion.

Broderick's works are known for their explorations of human nature, sexuality, and the pressing moral questions of his time. His novels often contained themes of religious conflict, societal con- straints, and the internal struggles of his characters. The backdrop of a conservative and religious Irish society in many of his books adds to the complexity and depth of his narratives.

John Broderick's significance lies not just in his literary achievements, but also in his courage to challenge societal norms and highlight the contradictions of human nature against the backdrop of a changing Ireland. Through his novels, he provides a poignant commentary on the struggles and transitions of a society at odds with itself, and he remains an important figure in Irish literary

[TIMELINE]
1927:
John Broderick was born in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland.

1940s-1950s: After completing his primary education, Broderick moved to England for a brief period. It was during these formative years that he began to observe the changing social fabric of both Ireland and England, something that would deeply influence his later works.

1960: Broderick's debut novel, "The Pilgrimage," was published. This novel offered an unflinching look at the life in small-town Ireland, particularly focusing on themes of sexuality and religion, which was groundbreaking for its time.

1960s-1970s: Over these two decades, Broderick wrote and published several other novels, including "The Waking of Willie Ryan," "The Flood," and "The Dark." Each of these explored the moral and social dimensions of Irish society.

1980s: In this decade, Broderick continued to write and publish. However, his health began to decline, which influenced some of his later works.

1989: John Broderick passed away.

challenges he faces in reconciling this with the deeply religious society in which he lives. The novel was quite controversial at the time of its release due to its honest and unflinching look at taboo subjects.

CHAMELEON
In memory of John Broderick, novelist (1924-89).

Was this, perhaps, too close to how you saw yourself?
Having spent your life playing hide-and-seek in plain sight,
acting out the roles they expected you to play.

Looking through your 'Waverley' notebook,
there were clues that you struggled with identity:
even as a child you took on the mantle of chameleon,
camouflaging yourself against the bakery-counter
you became what you needed to become.
Invisible to some, visible to others, but constantly
listening. Your enigmatic smile spreading
as your tongue darted out to capture conversations
to store away for future use.

Sentences re-assembled forty years later;
embroidered, stitched together, invisibly mended
and blended into old conversations.
To one old aunt you were the spoiled child
to another the quiet predator lying-in wait
poised to catch flies.
All your life you hid behind an invisible shield,

Ready to point the accusing finger.
