Smoke flap vents are designed to regulate airflow. for indoor heating. They control steam, smoke and heat pressure output in devices like chimneys, stoves and boilers.

Smoke flap ventilation is used on Kiowa tipis (teepees) as well as other plains tribes. Both of the smoke flaps have pockets that attach to tipi poles. These poles may be moved around the edge of the tipi on the outside. Moving the smoke flaps into a position enhances airflow up and out of the tipi and protects against bad weather.

When the wind is coming from the back of your tipi, the smoke flaps and poles should be set, so the smoke flaps are open in the same direction as the door: Likewise, if the wind is coming from the right or left, the flaps can be adjusted to allow wind to slide over them instead of directly into the smoke hole.
