The Oak tree provides strong timber and a plentiful crop of acorns, a source of food for many animals. Its timber has been used in Ireland for centuries due to its quality and durability.

The Sessile Oak, Quercus Petraea, is officially our national tree. Oak trees were sacred in ancient Ireland, known as the "King of the Wood" and were associated with strength, kingship and endurance. It was classified as a Noble of the Wood in Brehon Law.

Oak timber was used for constructing buildings, boats - including Galway Hookers, flooring, furniture and barrels.
